A Poem from a Friend to a College Golfer

Chance Holden finished his college golfing career today.
By Ron Wilcoxson

We are all extremely proud of all his accomplishments. However, we are most proud if the outstanding young man he has grown into. Below is a open his Mom and Dad, Tim & Julie Holden wrote on the drive home from Biloxi today.

A Boy and His Ball. A Tribute to Chance Holden

There was a little boy
Who played with a ball.
A hobby, we thought,
That is all.

He played in the Spring,
He played in the Fall.
Even in Winter
He was hitting that ball!

He grew and he played,
He got better and better;
Learned "The Rules of Golf"
Followed them to the letter.

Inspired by his brother,
A pastor, and friends;
He longed to compete
And piled up the wins!

He set records in school,
And he still holds 'em;
Gave the glory to God
The One Who bestowed them.

Through many towns
And through many states,
His love of the game
Did not dissipate.

We sent him to college
One day in the Fall;
His tuition was paid
Because of that ball!

As people would ask,
"Where did he get it?"
His Grandpa was quick
To take all the credit.

Through all the years
And through all the miles,
We've shed a few tears
But had lots of smiles.

He's played for himself,
A few, and a crowd;
That boy and his ball
Have made us so proud!

Love Mom and Dad

Open Letter to a Struggling Sister in Christ

PictureThe Symetra Tour
My Dear Sister;

Pardon the delay in answering, I was fortunate to attend the RBC Gwinnett Champions Tour Tournament in Atlanta the last couple of days, visit with some great Christian friends, attend the Night of Champions and get an incredible feel for how the Lord is working, still, in a mighty way in golf.

You are a God-send!!  No, literally!!  I can't wait to be able to share with you what I see relative to that, but, suffice it to say for now, you are sent by Him to this opportunity.

The things you mentioned; impetus to qualify for the US Open @ Pinehurst, your love for the town, your just mission qualifying by 1 shot two times (where will you qualify this year?), your 'dream' to play, spreading the word among your friends on the Symetra Tour, a difficult time in your faith journey, not captivated as much by 'mission', three years as a Christian, getting back to the abundant life, knowing Wally Armstrong, Chris Stevens as a great friend, Global Golf, OMG, I will tell you how......

We are on mission to continue to introduce the platform of golf as a major opportunity to bring together as many ministries and hearts for the Lord through golf in order to evangelize and disciple.  The fields are ripe for harvest, my Sister!!!  I will expand on that soon in a blog, I pray, but suffice it to say for now; we are on mission!

Picture
Through the Internet, you were inspired to contact me and inquire about the Open Doors to the Open.  God is in this and somehow, He has chosen you and me (and many others) to participate in this opportunity to honor Him.

Be encouraged! Your passion to play golf is God-inspired!!  He has placed this desire in your heart.  You have inside of you "everything you need for life and godliness in the knowledge of Him who called us (you) by His own glory and goodness". 2 Peter 1:3-11.  You have the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead and we can do all things in Christ.  You can qualify for the US Open.  Specifically pray for that to happen and see what the Lord will do.  I will join you in that prayer and you contact Chris Stevens and ask her to pray with you on this!!  Also, include Veronica Karaman in that prayer.  I'm sure Chris knows Veronica and she is on mission to accomplish the same goal; to His glory.

Pinehurst Village is anointed for this time.  It is clear by what is happening and the Lord is at work preparing the "road to Emmaeus experience (Luke 24).

Spreading the word among your friends on the Symetra Tour.  Yes, yes, yes!!!  This is your mission in your place participating in what God has for you right now.  I will send you several wrist bands. (I'll need your mailing address)  Tell your story and pass the band to a sister or brother and ask them to do the same.  "At such a time as this" you are exactly where you need to be; proclaiming and ministering to those in your sphere of influence. You will have a great story to tell in the near future of God's faithfulness through you; win or lose!!!

Having a difficult time in your faith journey and admitting that to me is a HUGE step, my sister!!  We are all on a struggling path to get to know Him better.  It is all part of the plan He has for us as we are sanctified in our mission.  We started out as babes in Christ when we decided to follow Him.  He fed us with the milk of His word to grow us into infants to toddlers and into adolescence, where you are right now. He will continue to move you toward the meat of His life as you faithfully seek the knowledge of His son and grow in the knowledge of God, including, experiencing the doubts, challenges and obstacles that are in your life.  He is faithful and is working in you on His timetable and growth process. Be faithful in seeking His face and be encouraged!!

Lack of mission energy is not uncommon as we try to live out our faith in the world.  We all experience it because we live in this world and are constantly battling the world and satan's minions.  Yes, satan will do anything to thwart us from our mission.  But, you are a child of the King.  He has overcome the world and you will as well as you faithfully seek Him and trust Him in all of your life.  We all experience the same lack of excitement at times.  It is part of our growth.

PictureSpringtime @ Pinehurst
I love the way you referred to the winter and the abundant life!  You probably didn't realize you put those close together, but, that is exactly what it is; winter, and the springtime of our abundant life is right around the corner, indeed!!  We know this, He said it; "I have come that they may have life, life to the full (abundant)."  You are in a bit of a winter time, but, be encouraged, spring is right here and we are entering it spiritually and physically.

The connection with Wally Armstrong is sooooo affirming to me.  Most everywhere I go or many that I speak to have had an experience with Wally or his writings.  He is a faithful servant that has persisted and persevered in His mission to get out the Gospel in the world of golf.  He is a gentle warrior that will get the big, "Well done" from the Lord.  He is on mission and, by the way, just like us, needs encouragement and prayer and fellowship along the journey.

I have never met Chris Stevens, but, honestly, I have been thinking about her and, at times, prayed for her in her mission on the LPGA Tour. Just last week, I asked Josh Nelson of Links Players Ministry to contact Chris and ask her to contact me.  I hope she will soon as we believe very strongly that we would have her speak during the Women's Open June 16-22 and, hopefully conduct the women's study in conjunction with another activity we would like to participate in.  Yes, please put me in contact with her if you would.

Global Golf..... WHAT!!!!!  That is our mission!!!!!  I am incredibly encouraged by that term.  I will investigate more.  If you have any online reference to Global Golf I would love to read and participate.  Wow!!!

Well, you can tell, I'm a mild-mannered and contemplative servant of God....... NOT!  I am on fire for Him and He has equipped me to be the warrior and fire-brand I am to do His work as He guides and empowers me.

Thank you for joining together with us to use our desire for the game of golf and our knowledge and gifted-ness from Him to glorify Him in our lives.

Blessings to you, my sister!!!  .

In Him

Stacey Lewis vs Lydia Ko - Great Golf - Video

4/27/2014

The Stacy Lewis vs Lydia Ko matchup is exactly the type of story Open Doors for the Open was hoping to be able to highlight as the time gets closer to the U.S. Open at Pinehurst in June.

The drama that has been played out the last few weeks on the LPGA Tour with great story lines and dramatic come-from-behind finishes as well as the recent firestorm created by the Sports Illustrated golf article about women in golf featuring a model engaged to a PGA Tour player versus successful competitive professional women golfers who should be the focus of media attention.  Now, it's being played out on the golf course as it well should be.

PictureStacy Lewis #1 with ODFTOpen
The perspective of Open Doors is focused upon Stacy Lewis who we have been following, praying to get to know and feature during our Open Doors for the Open and desiring a faith-based story line heading into the Open.

As we've featured before, Stacey Lewis is not just a wonderful player and ranked 3rd best in the world right now, current British Open Champion and short-lived #1 player at the end of last season, no, Stacey Lewis is a model woman and Believer in Jesus Christ exemplifying true faith in action on the LPGA Tour and world stage as a golf celebrity.

We are happy to highlight the great golf and the drama that is being played out on the Tour leading up to this historic event coming up in June in Pinehurst, but, we desire the opportunity to highlight the lives of the women and men of faith in Christ as they trek toward the event.  We hope we will continue to see the Christian character of these players on the world stage similar to what we saw in an obviously mature performance and demeanor exhibited by, now, two-time Masters Champion, Bubba Watson earlier this month.

The final round of the Swinging Skirts Classic in Lake Merced will make the LPGA Tour happy to see such drama playing out before a world-wide TV audience, but we will be happy to see the continued professional excellence of these ladies and the opportunity for Christ to be honored by the next champion regardless of who wins.

For more on Stacey Lewis' life please click here.  To find out more about the Open Doors for the Open opportunity and join us at Pinehurst, please click here....

Thanks so much...

Well, check this out.... I'm sure the majority of  you are very familiar with this online golf game, but, I found the "Virtual U.S. Open 2014"!!

I registered on the site and walked through the guidance of none other than David Leadbetter and now, I'm getting ready to take to Pinehurst #2 and play my U.S. Open practice round (at least I hope it's practice)!!  Let's follow through on this and see if it might turn into something of a challenge we can work through leading up to the Open and enjoy meeting and playing against each other??

Picture
Oh, my goodness, look at this!! They already have a tournament series setup for the U.S. Open with prizes!  This is gonna be good.

Ok, so, I'm signed up for my first Championship Event, the Pinehurst #2 U.S. Open Front 9 Challenge...... well, a bit confusing (probably because I didn't read all of the instructions), but, when I realized I was playing a "challenge" on each of the first 9 holes of Pinehurst #2, It became quite interesting...  Alright on #3 I won closest to the hole!!  Against whom I have no idea, but, I bet I get it better soon....

Picture
So, this is how they're scoring; looking at Total, you can see I didn't do exceptionally well on hole #1 & #2, but got it together on #3 & #4 and reduced my scoring.... let's keep on playin'.(notice the smart branding and hat purchasing offer, brilliant!)

Woo hoo, look at this shot on #9..... how about that.... lol!!!
Cllck here and watch the replay!
Picture
Alright, first shot at it, +35 higher than the leaders, but, I understand that we may get unlimited attempts at the challenge to win the prizes.

So check it out, it was fun....

Open Doors Marketing and Promotion

4/24/2014

U.S. Open Doors Promotion
Marketing/Promotions.

The Lord has been amazing as this effort for the Open Doors continues to come together!!  The basics of the opportunity are in place and an environment will be established in and around the Village Chapel of Pinehurst from June 9-22, 2014.  We are overjoyed!

Now is the time to begin communicating with Christendom relative to the opportunity for those who have a passion for golf and a love for Christ to hear the message and communicate it to their network of friends.

The primary means for promoting this opportunity will be through the www.opendoorsfortheopen.com website and an "assisted" social media campaign that will grow the brand and excitement through the various media available online.  This process takes the form of building a solid website that serves as a promotional tool, an informational source that will engage visitors to guide them into their place of interest and a communications tool for all to learn, grow and go!

Picture
The social media campaign must be engaged in by all of us who have a desire and passion to get the word out about this unique opportunity.  The website is established and we have begun posting blogs and evangelistic information so that those who visit will have ample guidance and information about the opportunity, etc.  What is essential is that all of us "post" text, audio and/or video blogs for the purpose of growing "search engine" trust which will increase the number of visitors funneled to the site.  We desire that this activity get to 3-5 blogs per day by April 15th and maintain that level of activity through the end of the event, June 30, 2014.  We invite YOU to submit written or video information relative to YOUR  passion for this opportunity.  Just let us know you would like to post something and we'll let you.  Or, simply go to a blog post and post your own comment on the blog and it will be promoted.

The social media campaign consists of, still, the people involved in the planning and promotion "posting" the information on their own Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn as well as any other social media that are frequented by the members of our team.  This is confusing to some people, but, it is relatively easy if you frequent ANY Social Media activity.  For instance, let's say you are an infrequent Facebook participant, the simple thing for you to do is go up to the blog you are reading, click on the Title and it isolates that blog.  Scroll down to the bottom of the blog and hit "Like".  This will automatically add the hyper-linked small reference to the Blog on your Facebook timeline.  This will automatically be shown to your friends and they will make their own decision about reading, clicking, liking and or commenting.  Once they do that, it automatically goes out to their network of Facebook friends.  See how easy that is?

Another example is LinkedIn.  This social media site is becoming quite valuable for serious connections to your network.  If you are a participant on LinkedIn, you can post to your LinkedIn timeline by clicking on the blog's URL or web address and copying the address.  Go to you LinkedIn page and post to your LinkedIn page with a comment about what you read and paste the address/URL to that comment.  This will post on your LinkedIn timeline and inform those who follow you that you have posted that information.

An email newsletter (eNewsletter) will be established by Open Doors for the Open and emailed weekly to an 'ever-growing' list of opt-in readers of the information distributed regarding the Open Doors.  The email list for the eNewsletter will begin with the over 1,300+ names included in the Open Doors for the Open database and will grow as visitors visit the site and sign up for receipt of the eNewsletter.

Picture
Additional promotion of the www.odftopen.com website will be accomplished by asking each ministry to include a 'panel' about the ODftOpen in a primary location on their website (preferably on the first landing page and above the fold), including links to the ODftOpen site.  Additionally, we ask that the ministry include the 'panel' and/or links and information about ODftOpen into all communications distributed from their ministry from April - July 1, 2014.  In other words, we are asking all ministries and individuals involved to promote the Outreach in any way possible throughout their network and social media.  We don't ask for a special campaign per se, just consistent inclusion of the Outreach information in all correspondence and activities from April - July.

Again, the idea is to draw visitors to the website, www.odftopen.com, to inform them, inspire their involvement in the Outreach and/or continued interest in golf ministry and gain their email address to include them in each new eNewsletter update.

Through the process above, we expect a significant growth in followers of our information, engagement as the user feels they should engage and a continued information source to help grow them and connect them to a golf or other ministry in their area.

Thanks so much.  Praise Him!!!

Building the Foundation Open Doors for the Open

4/22/2014

Picture
Open Doors for the Open in Pinehurst, NC in June 2014 part of building the foundation for similar future venues

....I have been trying to determine my right role and my right actions.

What does that mean and where does Open Doors for the Open fit into that?

I believe I have been called to help evangelize the world of golf as well as grow the game of golf.  What? Yeah, that is what I have believed has been my calling and it has been some 20+ years in the offing.  It started in 1981 when I decided to believe that Jesus was who God said he was in the Bible.  It continued when the Lord allowed me to participate in The Players Outreach Ministry, with Bobby Clampett and the PGA Tour Bible Study from 1993 - 1997 (read Bobby's testimony here). It languished, but continued to infiltrate my thinking through 2010 and began to take a different shape in 2011 through the middle of 2013.  Now it has become clearer on how this mission will be accomplished; through Open Doors for the Open in Pinehurst, June of 2014 and through the platform of www.opendoorsfortheopen.com.

You may not be aware that there are various organizations that represent and are working to introduce golfers throughout the world to the fact that Jesus Christ is real and reigns as King of the Universe.  I know that sounds a bit scary if you're not a follower of Christ, but, I hope you can learn to trust me that; HE is!!

Many organizations and individuals who believe this have been active in golf for a long time.  I only know of the Tour Bible Study and it's beginnings in the 1970's I believe.  I know of FCA Golf which began shortly after that.  I know of College Golf Fellowship (CGF) that began with Rik Massengale, I believe, and I know of Athletes in Action, Sports Spectrum and many other ministries that have impacted individuals who love golf and have been seeking out God.

But, I also know of the many, many golf pros that, individually, have a call on their lives relative to their belief in Jesus Christ as their Savior and His inspiration on their lives.  You can see a listing of these folks on the Links Players Website and I happen to have personal stories about Tom Lehman, Wally Armstrong, Bernhard Langer, Bobby Clampett, Larry Mize, Gary Hallberg, Paul Azinger and a few others. There has been a move of God on the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Web.com Tour, Hooters Tour and so many other Tours that I'm not able to write all of them down.  I have run into golf pros at daily fee courses and resorts as well as private clubs that know Christ and are itching to combine their love of God with their passion, and calling, as golf professionals.  And now we have open doors for the open as an environment to grow this effort.

One story that has kept me going during the last couple of years has been regarding a golf pro who I am not able to name, but, during a time in which I was attempting to plan and conduct a Christian Golf Tournament here in Nashville (possibly more on that later), I was explaining the concept to this pro and his director of golf.  They both saw the financial reward to the facility and the company, but, the pro pulled me to the side after the discussion and said words similar to this; "Bill, I have been a follower of Jesus Christ for 30 plus years and, quite honestly, I have not been able to figure out how to integrate my faith with  my profession.  Today, you helped me do that."  Now that's pretty cool!!!!  Praise Him.

We are embarking on a path to edify God and introduce Him and the work of His Son into the world of golf now and into the future.

Will you join us at Open Doors for the Open?

What can you do?

1. Contact me by email, billpoir@growthegameofgolf.com

2. Pray for the Lord to show you your part.

3. Pay attention to God's leading in your life relative to golf and Him

4. Pass the word around about this blog and the Open Doors for the Open outreach.

5. Get involved in your local church and area; "growing in the knowledge of God".

Thanks for reading
