The Real Master vs the Masters

The Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia is something that every golfer should experience.  It is truly the highest class of golf event and the most cherished grounds in golf (possibly only trumped by Pine Valley in NJ).

I have been very fortunate to attend 4 Masters tournaments.  I honestly have not had a more moving experience in golf than by attending this wonderful event.  One thing I remember so clearly was gazing up at the 40' tall Azalea trees in full bloom down through Amen Corner and did you know you would be hard pressed to find a weed or clover on that entire golf course.  It is absolutely stunning.

Did you know that Ben Crenshaw, two-time Masters champion, called Augusta National the "Cathedral of Golf" and I guess you sure could say that by observing the worshipers who attend the event each year.  I can attest to the fact that it is easy to make Augusta and the Masters a coveted place to frequent and worship.  The coveted Masters Badge used to be one of the hardest tickets to get for any sporting event in the world, but, it has been a bit easier these days as the Committee has allowed a lottery for practice day tickets and there seems to be more tickets available on the market.  Anyway, it is a pretty special to attend the event and store up those memories in this lifetime.

But, the question comes up that I, finally, asked myself many years ago and I believe Bernhard Langer voiced after his first Masters victory if I remember the story right.  He stated that after  winning the most coveted tournament in the world, he woke up the next morning and asked himself; "Is that all there is?"  Imagine, winning Wimbleton or the Super Bowl, the World Series, the World Cup and, from a golfers perspective, THE MASTERS and waking up the next day and it's not enough?  It didn't satisfy the craving or longing in this great champions heart.  What could be missing?

Benhard's story has been presented many times relative to his finding real meaning to life after that victory.  He happened to run into another Tour Player in the parking lot of the Heritage Classic in Hilton Head, SC on Wednesday after his victory and was invited into the Tour Bible Study where he met Larry Moody and eventually gave his life over to Jesus Christ.  From that time on, Bernhard has known the real Master and has dedicated his life to Him accomplishing amazing works outside of the golf course to effect peoples lives.

There are similar stories on the Tours; Zach Johnson, Tom Lehman, Davis Love, Payne Stewart, Scott Simpson, Stacie Lewis and many others that made, as Tom Lehman stated numerous times, "golf was my God" and, again, I have to admit being in that same place years ago.

But, there was a transforming occurrence that happened in each of our lives whether it was through a golf experience or a life experience or both.  That transformation occurred because the Master of all of creation guided us down a path to see the reality of Him in our lives and in the creation around us.

That is what we are praying to happen in the lives of those that will be drawn to this 2014 Men's and Women's U.S. Open Championships in June at the Village Chapel.  Our Open Doors for the Open will attempt to express our appreciation to the Lord for His goodness and guidance in our lives.  We want to share this gift with those who have a passion for golf and do or could have a love of God as well.

Join us and meet the real Master.

Thank you for reading.... bless you.
