What if you were invited to a golf tournament, truly an invitational, where you were invited by a friend or someone you may not even know that well, but, they contacted you and asked you to play @ a prestigious golf course, like Cleveland CC in Cleveland, TN. You were told it was exclusively for you and about 50 others who would be playing the course for FREE!! Everything, FREE!!!!
Wow, that sounds pretty cool, eh? That's just what it has been like this AM here in Cleveland as the Challenge Golf Association conducts another Invitational golf event. The CGA is the brainchild of Ron Potter and his Dad as they had conducted golf events around the country over the past 35 years. Ron is a committed Christian man who believes the game of golf can be a great platform to introduce male golfers to the fact that service and grace and mercy, the attributes of Jesus Christ can be shown on the golf course; showing the participants that even golfers can be Christ followers. "The service aspect of what we do is the most compelling, we think. At times, you can just see the reaction of the players. This is something they haven't experienced on a golf course before." Ron says and continues, "We hear time and again, 'Who's paying for thing?" or "Where do I pay?" and when we say it's free, we get the greatest looks. The second most important aspect of the event is the discipleship portion. "We have asked our caddies to serve, but, it's more than that, we ask them to build relationships with their invitees. Let's spend a year or so getting to know their guys and further show them the love of Jesus. That's really our motivation."
